Please Note:
PRSA Code of Ethics: 9. A member shall not guarantee the achievement of specified results beyond the member's direct control...
This Code paragraph, in effect, prohibits misleading a client or employer as to what professional public relations can accomplish. It prohibits guaranteeing specific results which, by their very nature, cannot be guaranteed because they are not subject to the member's control. As an example, a guarantee that a news release will appear specifically in a particular publication would be prohibited.
Can PR firms guarantee media coverage for their clients?
There are no guarantees with the media. Savvy PR pros pitch the media newsworthy stories, know what the media want and give it to them. No PR firm has the power to ensure what print and broadcast journalists will decide to cover. What ends up in the news depends on many variables, including: what else is in the news that day, the personal likes and dislikes of a particular journalist, a business owner’s ability to be an effective spokesperson and whether or not a similar story was covered recently. Of course, the skill, timing and persistence with which a PR consultant presents a company’s message are huge factors in media success. Hire a PR consultant with demonstrated success in media placement.
What is the difference between advertising and PR?
Advertising costs a lot of money. But you can call up your favorite newspaper, magazine, radio station or TV station and find out what they charge. Then contact a few publicists and find out what they charge. When you do PR, the media is ultimately the decider of if they are going to publish your press release, do an interview or feature you and/or your product in their publication and when. Most media do not accept money for editorial coverage. Obtaining great PR requires skill, finesse, timing – even luck. Ethical journalists do not cover stories because someone pays them to do so. Yet, when media and PR combine efforts and good coverage results, the client’s message is much more credible. Print media also has a great long lasting shelf life. Longevity. People save articles and publications. People send them to their friends. Everyone knows you pay for advertising. PR provides a third-party endorsement that advertising cannot match.
